River towns always seem to have an extraordinary past and Memphis is no exception. Characterized by some as a “wild river town with a veneer of gentility,” the reader can live those stirring times as seen through the eyes of the “old lawyer” himself – John Hallum. More of a memoir, these accounts are of particular interest to historians, genealogists, and lawyers – and of general interest to all who love a good yarn. Mr. Hallum wrote this at the twilight of his life and consequently his memory is a bit ambiguous at times and on the other hand, quite sharp at others. The editor has done extensive research in an attempt to clarify those ambiguous passages. From “The Kleptomaniac and the Jealous Wife” to “Marriage of May and December,” the reader will be enthralled as Mr. Hallum recalls his most fascinating and unusual cases in addition to the equally interesting people he knew. The anecdote about the mother of Nathan Bedford Forrest is a gem.The editor has added illustrations, old photographs, and a snippet from the Military History of Memphis by A. R. James. A time line of the history of Memphis is given in addition to a list of recommended reading. While the original text remains true as Hallum wrote it, the editor hopes that the supplemental information will enhance Hallum’s book and make for a more enjoyable reading experience.
